Warm welcome at The Bird Table Cafe

A husband and wife team are making sure their community has a meeting place as their neighbourhood continues to be built around them.

Bus driver Paul Hollingum, 61, and wife Sue, 60, a housewife, who have lived in Goldfinch Crescent, Jennett’s Park, for three years, are running a community cafe throughout the school holidays.

Paul, who has changed his working hours so he can volunteer at the Bird Table Cafe, said: “The whole idea came about because there isn’t a shop here yet.

“We thought in the summer holidays there would be loads of kids around and thought it would be great to have a place where mums can buy an ice cream or sweets.”

Paul sits on the committee of Jennett’s Park Community Association and has lots of plans for other activities he wants to run, such as an indoor bowling club and a bridge club.

The Bird Table Cafe is open at the Community Centre, Tawny Owl Square, for ice cream, sweets, coffee, tea and light snacks from Monday to Friday between 1pm and 5pm.
