Pair tackle Ramshackle Rally in 18-year-old Volkswagen Polo
August 08, 2012
Two pals heading on an amazing fundraising trek across Europe have decided on their vehicle – a teal, 18-year-old Volkswagen Polo.
Oliver Welsh, 31, from Edgcombe Park in Crowthorne, and his pal Simon Gibson, 28, from Jennett’s Park, got the car in Kent and now hope it will get them 1,500 miles in the Ramshackle Rally.
It is teal, but the two mates want to paint it yellow so it looks like the car driven by 80s cartoon superhero Danger Mouse.
Once it has a lick of paint, the car will match the outfits they intend to wear for the trip, Oliver as Danger Mouse and Simon as his faithful sidekick Penfold.
The race in September is a five-day trip from Calais to Munich, via Italy, Austria, and Slovenia.
The drive will take the 1000cc car, which distinctly lacks four-wheel-drive, up winding mountain passes.
They are taking part in the race to raise money for the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research charity.
They have raised around £500, but hope to hit £5,000 by the time they complete the race.
The rules of the race state the car cannot cost more than £200 and the two have already managed to agree sponsorship from Bracknell Print Room, whose logo will be emblazoned on the motor as it bravely struggles up the mountains.
The duo’s friend Charlotte Jones is helping to raise funds.
She said: “It’ll be interesting to see how the car gets on, it’s got a 1000cc engine and there are some very testing mountain climbs.
“They’re still looking for sponsors if anyone in Bracknell would like to help them out.”
Caroline added what would be very useful to the friends would be spare parts for the car, as well as a European Driving Kit.
