Yoghurt pot plan so kids can help reduce landfill

August 07, 2012

Schoolchildren are on a mission to help reduce landfill waste by recycling their families’ empty yoghurt containers.

Children at Swallowfield Pre-School and Farley Hill Primary School are collecting Danone, Activia, Shape and Actimel pots which will earn them two points for every empty pot.

The pre-school, in The Street, joined the Activia Yoghurt Brigade in January last year and has so far collected 2,544 yoghurt pots, which are taken to TerraCycle in London where they are turned into eco-friendly recycled products.

Through the scheme, the pre-school has raised £119.20 and Farley Hill Primary School, in Church Road, has now joined the initiative.

Jess Gardner, who has children attending both schools, said: “The real value for the school is how excited the kids get about how many plastic yogurt pots they can save.

“This enables us to teach them in a practical way the importance of resource conservation, recycling and upcycling.”

TerraCycle uses the yoghurt pots to create products such as watering cans and waste bins and upcycled products including folders, pencil cases, shopping bags, and notepads.

Mrs Gardner added: “It is quite inspiring. We will also happily accept the types of waste packaging we collect from any local people or businesses who wish to help us with our fundraising.”

Collection boxes can be found outside Swallowfield Pre-School entrance or inside the playground entrance at Farley Hill Primary School. Drop off is during term time only.

Hmm - small "logging in" error there allowing for duplicate posting. I wonder if that'll happen on other articles too. Oops.

Agree with you Woky Local. Manufacturers should be held responsible for all the items that can not be recycled in this country.

On one hand - fair play to the school and kids. On the other - Perhaps shops selling material that can not be recycled by the local authority should be required to host yoghurt pot recycling boxes rather than yoghurt manufacturers getting their branding inside schools?
