Schools ‘must receive training to spot grooming’

July 26, 2012

The schools where paedophile Bruce Roth abused pupils should ‘hang their heads in shame’, according to a child sexual abuse awareness campaigner.

Paedophile teacher caused ‘incalculable harm’ over decades

Marilyn Hawes, founder and director of child protection consultancy Enough Abuse, has fought a nine-year campaign for schools to spot grooming before abuse happens.

She said: “With so much child protection stuff this should have been noticed – they should hang their heads in shame and face the consequences.

“Teachers are trained in what to do when people have been abused – which form to fill in.

“Child sex abuse is a classless crime. It is not just low socioeconomic classes that are affected. Headteachers need to be trained with a specific focus on grooming.”

Those who take the Enough Abuse course say 50 to 75 per cent of the knowledge they learn on the day is new to them, she claims.

Marilyn added: “Roth’s 11-year sentence is great – he deserves it – the sentence he had put those boys under is for life.”
