Roth’s years of shame
Late 1980s-1994: Roth lands first job at King’s School, Rochester, and targets two boys aged eight or nine, during his time at the junior house.
Roth ‘treated’ one victim for a groin injury and another, a ‘very, very vulnerable’ child was touched ‘at least three times’ in his bedroom.
1994-2010: Roth moves to Wellington College where he set about abusing his victims in a ‘truly grave manner’.
The housemaster crept into bedrooms after ‘lights out’ and ‘tests the water’ in a similar pattern of ‘progressive’ abuse.
One victim attempts suicide after nine months of abuse. Another turns to Roth when there are problems at home but is subjected to around a year of abuse when he is 15.
Another victim, aged 15, calls Childline after Roth visits his room and strokes him several times.
October 2010: Roth is arrested and police seize a laptop that has pornographic images and search terms including ‘pre-teen’. He was then suspended by Wellington College.
Other victims come forward following police investigation and media coverage.
February 8, 2011: Roth appeared at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court charged with abusing the first victim to come forward. He was bailed until the following week.
February 15, 2011: Roth appeared at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court and was bailed to appear at Slough Magistrates’ Court in April 2011.
April 5, 2011: Roth appeared at Slough Magistrates’ Court charged with sex abuse of children.
Case is delayed as other victims come forward.
June 27, 2012: Roth’s trial at Reading Crown Court begins
Thursday, July 19, 2012: The jury goes out to deliberate.
Tuesday, July 24, 2012: The jury convicts Roth of 17 charges after more than 18 hours of deliberation.
Half an hour later Judge Simon Davis jails Roth for 11 years.
