How to prevent nuisance calls

By Becky Barnes
July 04, 2012

Regulatory body Ofcom is required to make available (and maintain) a register where you can opt out of receiving unsolicited sales calls.

Mum’s warning over call scam

- Register your details with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) at www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html or call 0845 070 0707.

- Within 28 days, a ban comes into effect that forbids any company cold-calling you over the phone.

- If you are still getting calls after 28 days, complain to TPS using the link above or call 0845 070 0707.

- TPS will contact the company and also report your complaint to the Information Commissioner who enforces the regulations.

There is a major problem with TPS. If you move and take your telephone number with you then TPS registers the number at your new address but deletes the previous registration. I am still recieving calls (for my old address two years after moving) presumably because the forms involved are using old telphone directories
