Beware of bogus gas man

A gas distributor is warning customers to take care when opening their doors to ‘alleged’ gas workers following a robbery.

Families and individuals in Wokingham and Bracknell Forest are being urged to be aware of bogus callers after two men posed as gas workers before forcing entry and attacking a 96-year-old woman in Surrey earlier this year.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) is warning customers to always be wary to allow workers into their homes.

Company spokeswoman Hannah Brett said: “The safety of our customers is paramount to us as a company. We do everything we can to make sure our gas engineers are identifiable, however we urge all customers to only open their homes to persons they are certain are genuine.”

SGN has advised that all its workers will be dressed in company branded clothes and display an ID with their details, picture and a hotline number which customers can call to check an individual’s authenticity.

She added: “If anyone is unsure, they should refuse entry and either call the ID badge number or, if they have real suspicions, immediately call the police.”

The gas company serves 3.9 million customers in central southern and south-east England.

No arrests have yet been made following the Surrey robbery.
