Alterations made to roundabout after drivers complain about "lane-jumping"

By Hugh Fort
June 18, 2012

Further changes will be made to a new roundabout system after complaints from drivers about the lanes around it.

Bracknell Forest Council has announced it is looking to change the timings of the lights and road markings leading to the roundabout near the Horse & Groom Harvester in Bagshot Road.

The authority had received complaints over the lane markings had led to dangerous "lane-jumping" while travelling around the roundabout.

Neil Mathews, principal engineer (traffic and safety) at Bracknell Forest Council said: “Our 18-week programme of improvement works to the Horse and Groom roundabout was delivered on time and the traffic lights were switched on last week (Thursday, June 6).

“As with all large projects, refinements are always required in the early stages and our engineers will be making minor changes to the traffic light timings and road markings on the junction.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank drivers and residents for their patience during these works, and hope they are getting used to the new layout of the road and additional lanes that it provides."

Sorry Lads, I'm a Lane Jumper and I love it...I do actually think I can do what I like on the Roads and can't help myself. But at least I indicate and am courteous. I also visit my elderly Mum at least every two days and do not stop my Children from seeing me (Post Divorce).

It's nothing to do with the lane markings, it's all to do with the fact that people are ignorant and can't be bothered to get into the correct lane in the first place which results in lane jumping, you get this at 95% of roundabouts whether there are road markings or not.

As someone else has already said, the problem is because most drivers need to have more lessons/take their test again... they'd probably fail.

I actually agree with everyone here. The new layout is much better, just needs some getting used to. There has always been lane jumping at that roundabout too, same as twin bridges, because people either can't drive, are selfish, or both.

Also agree about the Jennets Park roundabouts, although I noticed some of the lines seem to have been removed. The markings were ridiculous, whoever had designed it needs to be sacked.

I think there isn't a problem with the new layout, I just think a lot of drivers needing driving lessons again, there are many roundabouts with similar layouts so why is this one a problem?

There has always been a lane-jumping problem at this roundabout, it has not been caused by the new road layout.

The "problem" is that there are two lanes on Bagshot Road, and only one down past the fire station, and it's a busy route with frequent queueing. People queue jump in the right-hand lane and then cut in. It would take a dual carriageway right down Downshire Way to solve that, meaning an expensive new bridge at the underpass, and lost trees further down.

It seems to me that the new layout is a big improvement, because now there is a two-lane roundabotu exit with a barrier from the opposite traffic, and not just the single lane, so the cutting-in does not have to happen on the roundabout.

They need to make the road markings clear on the Jennets Park roundabout, the amount of idiots that get in the left hand lane to go right is unbelievable. And the roundabout for the Peacock Farm has incorrect lane markings, indicating that the left hand lane is left turn only, and the right hand lane is straight on or right. It should be the left hand lane for left or straight over, right hand lane to turn right. This is such basic stuff it irritates me that they can't do it correctly! I follow the markings that they've given though, even knowing they're wrong, because when that day comes when someone side swipes me (and it will happen) then at least I'll have been the one paying due care and attention to road markings.

Well that is a surprise. I have been thinking how much better is is now. Not sure if changing things will actually stop the people who think they can just do what they like on the road. I use this roundabout twice a day and to me it is a major improvement. I suspect some of the complainers are the people who were used to bombing around this roundabout without giving concern to other road users.
