Crumbs! Motor mad pals set out for European adventure
May 23, 2012
Two motor-mad mates are hoping to be the strongest, the quickest and the best as they drive a £200 car across Europe dressed as two famous cartoon characters.
Oliver Welsh, 31, from Edgcombe Park in Crowthorne, and his pal Simon Gibson, 28, from Jennett’s Park, will tackle the Ramshackle Rally Munich dressed as cartoon superhero Danger Mouse and his faithful sidekick Penfold.
The rally will see the competitors drive through France, Italy, Austria and Slovenia before finishing in Munich. The competition rules say the competitors must use vehicles that cost less than £200.
The duo are hoping to get a car and kit it out like Danger Mouse’s car in the cartoon. Oliver said: “Like many other people, my family has been affected by leukaemia. Thanks to 50 years of work by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the treatment was successful. Simon and I felt that raising £5,000 for the charity would be a great way to support them and thank them for their help.”
Simon added: “Although the rally is still several months away, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us. We need to source a suitable car and decorate it, stock up on supplies and, of course, encourage people to donate to such a worthy cause via our JustGiving page.
“We’re grateful to our friends and families who have supported us so far.”
Both Oliver and Simon are motoring enthusiasts.
Simon, who works as a project manager for Logica, a business and technology service company, is a fan of Vauxhalls and Oliver loves to restore old Ford Capris in his spare time.
They are also looking for sponsors for their car. Simon said: “Fuel will be our main expense, but ferry crossings, accommodation, food and spare parts for the car are among our other costs.”
Anyone coming forward as a sponsor will have the logo of their choice displayed on the car. For details, email RallyTeamDM@gmail.com.
