A Crown Wood woman and her four-legged friend have already signed up to take part in a special event to mark Thames Hospicecare’s 25th anniversary.

Karen Hope, 26, and her pet dog Charlie are to take part in the Woofs & Wellies 9K sponsored walk in Windsor Great Park next month.

Michelle Bowdidge, events fundraiser at Thames Hospicecare, said: “This year, we are celebrating our 25th anniversary and this brand new event is one of many fun activities the hospice is staging.

“This will be a fun occasion for dog owners and their pooches and training for the 9K event is also a great way to kick-start your New Year fitness resolutions as well as enjoying the great outdoors.”

All entrants for Woofs & Wellies will be rewarded at the end and every registered pooch that collars its owner into taking part will receive a dog tag and its very own doggy bag of treats.

A recent survey by Help The Hospices found six out of 10 hospice patients have asked to see a beloved pet or to spend the day with a favourite animal while receiving care, making it the most common request of hospice patients.

Karen Hope, a teacher from Crown Wood, said: “All dog owners love to go walking with their pets and so when I saw this event advertised, it seemed like the perfect thing to take part in.

“Not only will Charlie and I be getting some much needed exercise after the festive period, we will also be raising money for a fantastic cause.

“Since the survey reveals how important pets are to people who are cared for in hospices, this event seems even more fitting.”

The event is taking place on Saturday, February 25.
