Roadworks coming to A322 roundabout

December 14, 2011

Roadworks to improve safety and reduce congestion at Bracknell’s Horse and Groom roundabout start next month.

The approach to the roundabout on the A322 Bagshot Road will be widened and redesigned, the road will be resurfaced and new lighting will be installed.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the 18-week scheme but most of the work will be carried out during off-peak hours between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

The final stage of the project will take about a week when the road will be closed for some nights to allow contractors to re-surface and re-line the entire roundabout.

Bev Hindle, chief officer for planning and transport at Bracknell Forest Council, said: “The council would like to apologise in advance to any motorist who finds their journeys are disrupted by the roadworks while we make improvements.”

Councillor Mary Ballin, executive member for planning and transportation, said: “This is a major investment to improve the capacity and safety of this junction and to help alleviate congestion.”

Regular updates will be posted on the council’s website at www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk

The lane markings are crazy;if I want to take the last exit i.e turn right,I will get into the right hand lane of my entry carraigeway, traverse the roundabout and after the penultimate exit signal left and take my required exit,in the meantime positionong myself correctly on the roundabout ignoring the lane markings. With these lane markings (if I followed them slavishly),I would get in the left hand lane, and stay in the outside lane all the way round it until I came to my exit.I find many people doing this, you expect them to take the previous exit (because they are in the outer lan) and signalling left before that previous exit) and they just keep on coming. The markings are totally crazy and dangerous.(Coupled with the ignorance of most drivers of the correct way to signal at a roundabout as specified by the Highway Code-that is if they signal at all)

There is nothing wrong with the lane markings on the current roundabout, the problem is most drivers are so thick they don't know how to drive. I often see people drive out of their lane go half way round the roundabout the jump back without indication, your just a bad driver. Even people who live in the area constantly get in the wrong lane, for example when leaving the town centre, they get in the right hand lane (Downshire way) to go to Easthampstead, get round the roundabout and just before the exit the Eashampstead jump lanes. Same at Twin Bridges, the number of people who for no reason at all go in the wrong lane, but the lane markings are so clear! We should fine people who can't follow simple road markings.

As for temporary lights, a very good idea, we need some traffic control during busy hours. The same can be said for the Sports Centre roundabout too.

This roundabout has become a nightmare to use since someone painted "lanes" on it;coupled with drivers who have no idea of how to signal as they traverse it,I have seen numerous "near misses".All this roundabout needs is traffic lights on the Downshire Way and Bagshot Road entries to allow traffic from Broad Lane,Rectory Lane and the town access it.Our money is going to be wasted again.

"...eliminate any common sense with regards to traffic planning"

You're on the money there Brad - has there ever been any common sense when it comes to traffic in Bracknell? I've never seen such appalling ideas - and in a town that hosts TRL!

Why have a road that travels from A to B when we can make it split into three lanes, converge on a roundabout that filters into two lanes, on an adverse camber, with the opposite flow of traffic having three different options for negotiating the same roundabout?

That's the trouble with common sense - it ain't that common!

I wonder what sum of money is being paid from this?

Is it a consequence of Bracknell's plans for past, present and furure high density house building?

I read this as "We are going to make it worse, as always. We plan on stopping any form of traffic flow, to eliminate any common sense with regards to traffic planning and to reduce speed limits because heaven forbid anyone drive over 30 anywhere in Berkshire. The 'temporary' lights will of course become permanent, like the 'temporary' speed limit for the approach as we built the A329M. We are more than likely going to use Ringway again, after they did such a great job the last time they resurfaced the A322. And don't worry, we're all getting very well paid for this"
