As 2011 approaches we take a look back at the biggest stories in Bracknell from February this year.

A mum was shocked when she found a three-inch carpet knife in a toy she was about to give to her 17-month-year-old daughter.

Suzie Bennett was unwrapping the plastic toy cleaning set for her daughter Ruby when the blade fell out of the packaging.

She was: “I was just undoing it all when something fell out and on to the floor.

“My partner picked it up and said: ‘Where did this come from?’

“I told him it fell from the toy and he looked shocked and said it looked like some sort of knife.”

She bought the toy from the New Cut Price Warehouse in Bracknell town centre, whose manager Armajit Lail said: “I don’t know what happened – we don’t have that kind of knife here.

“The other toys have been checked one by one and I am confident something like this could not happen again.”

Bracknell Forest Council’s trading standards felt the blade had got into the packaging earlier and contacted their counterparts in Cornwall because the toy was bought from there.

Super-mum Jane Gates, who set up a charity after her nine-year-old son died from a rare form of cancer, was crowned the Mum of the Year by Tesco Magazine.

Jane, 47, from Broomfield in Binfield, was nominated by her mum Pamela Walters for the award.

Her son Sebastian Gates was diagnosed in 2001 with having the very rare Wims’ tumour, and died after a two-year battle in 2003.

In those two years, he started raising money for children in a similar position and said to his mum he hoped the cash would be used for a holiday home for other sick children.

After he died, Jane set up the Sebastian’s Action Trust charity in Sunningdale and has now raised the money to build the home in North Waltham near Basingstoke.

It will open in May 2011.

She was given the award after being picked out by judges including Sarah Brown, wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Users of The Look In Café were thrown a lifeline as council bosses pulled the funding for the popular over 50’s café.

The council voted not to put in the £60,000 it put forward to run the café, but had been working alongside the voluntary sector to find a way to keep it open.

The plans were met with protest by café users who said having it run by volunteers would be too unreliable.

However, despite the initial fears, a committee was formed and nearly a year on the café is still going strong.

Another super mum was on the front page when Rosi Sexton became the world’s flyweight number one in women’s mixed martial arts.

The 5ft 4ins mum from Crowthorne has travelled all over the world competing and is regarded one of the best fighters around.

The heartthrob met his adoring fans until 11pm at the store and signed copies of his album “Unconditional: Love Songs.”

Superfan Stephanie Milstead got up to take her place in the queue at 5am – 13 hours before the Aussie superstar turned up.

She said: “It was worth it, he’s lovely, I can still smell him on my hair. He said a few things to me, he thanked me for waiting and then when I had a picture taken with him he put his arm around me and rubbed my back.”
