UFOs no joke – even Hugh Dennis believes they’re here!
By Mike PyleJuly 27, 2010
In a spooky coincidence, even a top comedian is talking about little green men coming to Bracknell as more people spot ‘UFOs’ hovering over the borough.
UFO sightings in Bracknell
Hugh Dennis, star of the BBC’s Mock the Week, joined the debate about extra-terrestrial visitors coming to the town when he made a quip in last week’s screening.
In the final round of the show, which first went out on Tuesday, July 15, the panellists were asked to suggest ‘unlikely lines to hear in an action film’.
Hugh suggested “The Martians landed about 4am in Bracknell, went ‘err…’ and went home again.”
It seems as though Hugh may have been at least partly right, as there has been a string of unusual sightings in the sky above Bracknell.
Two weeks ago The Standard reported how Bullbrook man Zdravko Nanev spotted an orange light floating in the sky from the window of his flat.
Several people contacted The Standard to say they had seen something similar, including Ellen Lewis from Harmans Water who saw an odd light in the sky in March and even managed to catch it on film, complete with an “eerie” noise.
Later, Owlsmoor man Malcolm Phillips got in touch to say he saw something strange in the sky on Monday, July 5, and then had an odd experience the following week.
He said: “I was out in the garden with my cat and there was this orange glow in the cloud. I’m an engineer so I’m good with scales, I would say it was about 100ft in diameter and it was probably around 1,000ft to 1,500 feet up. I said to my cat ‘I’ve never seen anything like this in all my 64 years of life’.
“The cloud was pulsating with the light. Then, the next Monday, I was in bed and my cat just looked up, his fur was all on end, it woke me up and there was light, this ultra-bright light coming through the window. There is something unusual going on.”
Bracknell woman Jo Salden called to say there is probably a rational explanation for the strange goings-on.
She said: “Those orange lights – they’re Chinese lanterns. I see them quite often because I work nights.
“I first saw them last year and I didn’t know what they were but then I saw one and it landed so I had a closer look. There weren’t any aliens running around, it was just one of these Chinese lanterns.”
Chinese lanterns are candles surrounded by wire frames lined with tissue paper. When the candle is lit the hot air causes the lanterns to float into the air.
They are often released at parties, festivals and fireworks displays.

We did see this episode of Mock the Week and did find it quite funny that they mentioned Bracknell... but I would have expected an article within a few days... not almost 2 weeks...
