New MP pledges to make country great again

June 28, 2010

In his first speech in the Commons Bracknell’s new MP vowed to help put the ‘great’ back into Great Britain.

Dr Phillip Lee, elected last month, said: “I have no idea how long I have in this house, that is up to the people of Bracknell constituency to decide, but when I leave I hope I will have contributed to putting the “great” back in Great Britain.

His maiden speech was applauded by a fellow Tory MP Tony Baldry, who said it was “truly outstanding”.

He was also praised by David Willetts MP, the minister for universities and science, for his passionate delivery.

Dr Lee made his first address to the House of Commons on Wednesday, June 16.

As is customary in maiden speeches, he praised the work of former MP Andrew MacKay, who served for 29 years in Bracknell before having to stand down after his role in the expenses scandal.

He then spoke on the “futuristic” industries operating out of Bracknell like 3M and Cable & Wireless, as well as the areas of Crowthorne, Sandhurst and Finchampstead.

Dr Lee mentioned this week’s budget and the “dreadful finances of this country” and went on to speak of the importance of growing the space industry.

He said the Bracknell Forest area provides a “multitude of economic opportunities” and highlighted the work of the local company Tektronix in Western Road, which provides parts for satellites.

Dr Lee added: “I am often asked why I stood for election to this chamber and moved away from being a doctor to being a Member of Parliament.

“To my mind, people who come in here should want to make this country a better place.

“I want to put Britain first.

“I do not want to be part of a Government who manage decline.

“One way of doing that is by having a strong high-tech sector.

“Government’s role is to reduce tax and regulation and thereby stimulate an increase in scientific knowledge.”

And a lot of the British benefit fraudsters are worse than the hard-working immigrants too.

Illegal immigration is a problem, but not all immigration.

I wish he would shut up praising Andrew Mackay . The thieving dishonest man is a shame to Bracknell

Total garbage and propaganda.Due to socialism and immigration since 1945 this country has gone downhill and will continue to do so.We are well on the way to becoming a third world country.

It wasn't that bad until most of the shops closed down. I used to work at 3M and would occasionally shop in town at lunchtime. However, most days I had too much work to even consider taking a lunchbreak, and especially not one that would take more than 30 minutes, so a quick pop down to the canteen to buy food then back up to my desk to eat (while working) was all I got.

Umm.. big concrete thing in the centre of Town? Ring a bell?

Cheap car parks and reasonable variety. I don't think it's as bad as all that!

It would be really nice If all these companies staff could shop in our shopping centre and park in our car parks, oh! silly me what was I thinking Bracknell hasn't got one, well we have but not worth shopping in.
