50 speeding drivers caught

March 19, 2010

Fifty drivers were caught overdoing it on the gas pedal in a speeding operation in Birch Hill and Hanworth – one doing 50mph in a 30mph limit.

The operation was launched on Thursday last week by PC Bob Wade of Thames Valley Roads Policing, who was joined by neighbourhood officer PC Michael Foot, and Jo Legg of Birch Hill and Hanworth Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG).

The first check was in Ringmead near South Hill Park starting at 8am and the second was in Hanworth Road between 10am and 11am.

Of the 50 motorists caught exceeding the 30mph limit on each road, those driving over 40mph were fined £60 and given three points on their licence.

Drivers going between 38mph and 39mph were also fined but were given the chance of going on a speed awareness course instead of penalty points.

Those caught doing between 35mph and 37mph were given the chance to accept roadside education.

The driver caught doing 50mph will appear before magistrates.

PC Wade said: “Ringmead is already policed using the speed camera vans so this was in addition to that.

“This is the second time the NAG chair Jo Legg has been at the roadside with us and I welcome the opportunity to show the operation to her.

“It’s a shame so many ignore the limits. This is not only a road safety issue but an anti-social issue as well. I am confident that habitual speeders will be caught.

“I will continue to support neighbourhood officers in dealing with this priority given to them by the residents.”

   Sus, I agree with you.

The driver going at 50 should have been stopped, but the others don't seem that much of an issue to me.

I agree that police do need to target people who use phones, apply make-up etc while driving, and they do need to spend some time at Twin Bridges roundabout - not just for people jumping lights but also those that don't seem to understand how lanes work, get in the wrong one, and then try to pull across into someone else's car without indicating... (or even worse, the ones who get in the correct lane, move across cutting someone else up, then move back again when they need to exit the roundabout).

I think some people need to be re-educated on using roundabouts, and how lanes on them work.

I try to take speeding as a really serious issue - but just can't. Well not 35mph in a 30 zone. Just wish the police could more conspicuously target drivers who are still using their mobile phones whilst driving. Or the ones who apply mascara, shave or drink coffee whilst driving. Or the ones who jump the lights at the Twin Bridges Roundabout and then hold everyone else up. Then again perhaps the police could practice handling accident scenes so that the rest of the traffic is not held up for hours as happened on Thursday morning.
