‘Weapon’ CDs to be swapped for MP3s at Broadmoor

March 15, 2010

Broadmoor patients could be given MP3 players in an effort to stop them using broken CDs as weapons.

West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which runs the high security Crowthorne hospital, has already taken the measure in another hospital and is now looking to do the same at Broadmoor.

A spokesman said: “In response to various incidents where CDs have been deliberately broken by patients in our men’s medium secure unit, causing potential risk to both staff and patients, CD players are to be replaced with MP3 players.

“As similar issues have been identified at Broadmoor Hospital, this solution is now being considered for use within this service.”

The spokesman said that music plays an important part in the recovery process as it provides stimulation that stops patients becoming withdrawn.
