Pepper packed a little extra

March 15, 2010

A seemingly normal pepper turned out to contain a nasty surprise when a 26-year-old woman went to cook a spaghetti bolognaise.

When Cathryn Kampa, who works at Wincor Nixdorf in Fishponds Road, went to dice her pepper she discovered a “moth-like” insect inside.

The Spanish-grown pepper, purchased from Tesco in Finchampstead Road in a double packet, has been sent to the supermarket’s complaints department and the firm has promised Miss Kampa a full refund.

Miss Kampa, who lives near Lightwater in Surrey, said: “I was shocked. At first I just thought it was mouldy but then I realised it had a bug in it.”

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We have robust product quality checks in place for every product we sell.

“However occurrences like this are extremely rare and with all the will in the world, it is not possible to examine fresh fruit and veg from the inside.

“We will of course offer the customer a refund.”

I had the same thing happen a couple years ago. I was surprised to find that produce that comes to the US from Mexico goes through very little inspection and they don't consider finding a moth in the pepper to be a problem. I did! I still have trouble cutting open a pepper cuz I don't want to find another moth! Yuck!

In some countries this may be considered a delicacy!

Gosh! How do some people think these things are produced? Big story - a natural product, grown in the countryside, has a creature from nature inside it. Some of our parents lived through the Blitz - move on, lady, I don't think this is a life-ruining experience . . .
