Runaway horses learn their lesson

March 12, 2010

Pupils at a school in Binfield were a little surprised when they arrived for lessons to find some unusual neighbours keen to learn a bit of horse-tory.

Children at Newbold School in Popeswood Road turned up on Tuesday to find eight horses locked inside the school grounds.

According to school staff, a woman passer-by had found the horses roaming around the roads and had managed to herd them into the staff car park and secure the gate.

A rescue operation took place involving police, vets, the horses owners and the RSPCA.

It was not until 2pm that the horses, which were thought to have escaped from a field in Wokingham, were taken home in horseboxes.

The pupils had to stay inside for most of the day, but were captivated by the operation going on outside.

The operation went smoothly, apart from one horse which had never been ridden or trained, which had to be sedated.

Pupil Hanna said: “My school day was really funny, I loved the horses.”
