Andrew MacKay's appeal over expenses pay back

February 04, 2010

Bracknell's MP and his wife are understood to be among 70 members from all political parties to appeal over repayments of expenses.

Andrew MacKay and Julie Kirkbride, MP for Bromsgrove, have both been named in a list of MPs who have appealed after being told by Sir Thomas Legg to pay back money wrongly claimed.

Mr MacKay had not responded to calls from getbracknell by the time of going to press.

Sir Thomas is due to release a report into the expenses scandal today which is thought to name more than 300 MPs who have made improper claims.

Both Mr MacKay and his wife are standing down in the wake of the scandal, which revealed he was claiming for a second home in Westminster without having a main home while his wife was claiming a second home allowance for their home in Bromsgrove.

Wokingham MP John Redwood is also on the list of MPs who have appealed, as is former Conservative leader Michael Howard and Douglas Hogg, the Tory who famously claimed to have his moat cleaned and Sir

Peter Viggers, who claimed £1.645 for a floating duck house.

It is understood the list contains 35 Labour MPs, 30 Tories, three Liberal Democrats and two independent MPs.

Funny how the majority are from Labour and Conservatives, which are the two main parties. I think it's time the government was reshaped to allow some of the smaller parties to have a chance...
