A “stonking” Olympic class  trampolining centre is part of almost £2 million sports facilities added to a Bracknell school.

Brakenhale School in Rectory Road also has new cricket nets and a square, an all-weather court, a rugby pitch and a resurfaced tennis and netball courts.

Councillor Bob Wade, mayor of Bracknell Forest, had a busy day with the mayoral scissors as he officially opened the all-weather courts and the trampolining centre.

The opening marks the end of two years hard work by staff at the school and Bracknell Forest Council.

The £1.95 million project is funded by a big lottery grant to Bracknell Forest Council and a land sale by the school.

The equipment for the trampoline centre cost £120,000 and has been supplied by Edgbarrow Trampolining Club.

As well as pupils at the school, the centre is used by community groups.

At the opening, members of the Danish and New Zealand national trampoling squads were at the centre practising.

Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, corporate service and public protection, said: “For a long time, we have been very keen to have a trampolining centre in Bracknell and now we have one of only three Olympic class facilities in the South East.

“The staff here have been fantastic for what has been nearly 18 months of the playground largely being a building site, but we are just about there now.”

Cllr Wade added: “These are some really stonking facilities.

“The all-weather pitch is superb and the trampolining centre is outstanding.

“Having facilities like this is particularly important in the run-up to 2012 and it’s great to able have a facility like this.”

As part of the opening parents, governors and members of the council’s education department were given a tour of the facilities.

The group was given dance demonstrations by three year groups at the school, observed a badminton lesson where Cllr McCracken showed a great ability to hit the shuttlecock into the net, and saw some spectacular technical moves on the trampoline from the pupils.

Headteacher Paul Salter added: “We now have some really fantastic facilities for both our pupils and the local community.

“It’s a great thing to be able to provide at the school.”
