Sgt Major Darren Chant honoured at Sandhurst Remembrance Service

November 13, 2009

Remembrance Day in Sandhurst had added poignancy this year in the wake of a tragedy felt acutely in the nearby military academy.

More than 1,000 people gathered at the war memorial in the Memorial Park in Yorktown Road on Sunday to pay their respects to people who have died in wars and conflicts around the world.

Among those being remembered was Regimental Sergeant Major Darren Chant, 40, of Camberley, who was among five people killed when an Afghan policeman turned his gun on British soldiers he was supposed to be working alongside last Tuesday.

The father of three’s pregnant widow, Nausheen, is an admin assistant at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy.

Sandhurst town councillor Norman Bowers helped organise the service on Sunday.

He said: “I think recent events have focussed people’s attention.

“The event went very well and there were a lot of people there.

“A lot of young people came as well because we included all the cubs and the brownies and that sort of thing.

“I think it’s important for young people to be involved as it’s another way of making sure they continue to remember.”
