IRA planned to bomb Sandhurst military academy

November 03, 2009

The IRA planned to bomb the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst in the Seventies according to files released by the National Archives last week.

The academy was on of a list of targets compiled by a four-man IRA unit and seized by police in a raid at a flat in Stoke Newington, London, in 1975, following a six-day siege.

Other targets on the list included the Madam Tussauds waxworks, The British Museum and Buckingham Palace.

The four men behind the list, Hugh Doherty, Joe O’Connell, Eddie Butler and Henry Duggan, also known as the Balcombe Street gang, carried out a 14-month bombing campaign across London that involved 40 explosions and left 35 people dead.

They were arrested following the siege in December 1975 but were released in 1999 as part of the Good Friday Agreement.
