Swine flu cases continue to increase in Bracknell

July 22, 2009

More cases of swine flu are being confirmed throughout the country everyday – with the related death toll rising to 30.

Berkshire East, including Bracknell Forest, has been a declared swine flu ‘hotspot’ for a couple of weeks now – a sign the area is among the worse hit places.

The key message for everyone remains to stay calm and, if you have flu-like symptoms, stay at home and call your GP.

A dedicated swine flu hotline is expected to be operational by the end of this week.

I have had treatment from swine flu, starting on the 9th of July. My personal experience is that the south-east berkshire swine flu helpline was working well at that point in time. A week later, however, when my daughter caught it, they were under pressure and refused to deal with anyone who didn't have the means to measure their temperature! I'm sure every home _should_ have a medical thermometer, but I imagine we're not the only ones who do not. This requirement just added to the load on GPs. Just for the record, if you report a temperature consistently over 38.5 then you will get accepted.

I was not swabbed for swine flu, nor has anyone else I know that has had it. So we might not have had swine flu, but another illness. What do we do when the vaccinations come along?

My symptoms were fairly mild, and I'd say that most people should not be concerned, seasonal flu probably takes as many lives as swine flu will.
