No plans to step down as Bracknell MP - MacKay
By Alison HepworthMay 14, 2009
Andrew MacKay has said he has no plans to step down as MP for Bracknell after his resignation as parliamentary adviser to Tory leader David Cameron this morning.
“I have put a huge amount of my life into that constituency,” he told BBC Radio 5Live, adding that “it is for the constituents to decide” if he continues as MP.
Mr MacKay was speaking after it emerged he and his wife, Bromsgrove MP Julie Kirkbride, had been claiming second-home allowances on both of their houses – one near Westminster and one in Ms Kirkbride’s constituency.
Bracknell MP Andrew MacKay resigns over unacceptable expenses claims.
Mr MacKay added: “We originally went to the fees office and spoke to most senior officer and said, ‘these are our two family homes’.
“We took their advice and that seemed acceptable.
“I thought it was acceptable. We had two substantial homes with two substantial outgoings.
"I now fully accept and totally appreciate this doesn’t look reasonable and in the interest of gaining trust in parliament I resigned.”
He said he was among the first to submit his claims and receipts after the Tory leader promised MPs would pay back any unreasonable claims made.
Mr MacKay has been claiming £1,000 a month for the home near Westminster and Julie Kirkbride has claimed £900 a month for the West Midlands home.
He added that he no longer claimed a second-home allowance and that he was now claiming a London supplement of £7,500 because Bracknell is so close to the capital.
Mr MacKay promised to cooperate with the parliamentary scrutiny panel set up to examine MP expenses.
MP Andrew McKay
I now fully accept and totally appreciate this doesn’t look reasonable and in the interest of gaining trust in parliament I resigned
I going to pay back what is right and proper and that is down to the scrutiny panel and I have said what is not reasonable I will pay back."I think you will find there are a number of married MPs claiming second-home allowances. It is not fine and that is why I will pay it back.”
David Cameron was “pleased” to receive his resignation, Mr MacKay said.
Mary Ballin, Mr MacKay’s agent and also a borough councillor for Bracknell Forest, said: “Of course I have spoken to Andrew today. As far as I know he has no plans to step down as Bracknell MP – I hope he doesn’t.”

His expense claims may have been within the rules but it was certainly against the spirit of them.
I am amazed that he is still hanging on to his job as an MP. I can only assume he has to rake in as much salary as possible before the next election so as to be able to pay off the money he owes the tax payer.

If the Conservatives in the seat have any sense of morals they should sack him . If they will not voters should kick him out at the next election. The same should happen to his wife, politics can do without people like these.
MPs have no idea of the fury and contempt 'ordinary' people have for them!

The cornerstones of any relationship is trust and integrity-and MacKay's broken both with his unacceptable behaviour (does anybody believe his protests of ignorance when his wife's claiming carpet cleaning expenses?)
Just a few weeks ago he took a cheap shot in the Commons at local firm Park Direct, jeopardising 35 employees' jobs, without getting his facts straight. MacKay hid behind his parliamentary privilege and implied extortion-I'm not a fan of parking enforcement but what a hipocrite!!!
Sack him as MP of our constituency, investigate what executive or board positions he's also milking and let him make his living in the real world like the rest of us! Wake up people...give him the boot!

Please let me say first of all that I most certainly do not condone some of the expense claims that have been highlighted in the media recently - no one in their right mind should be claiming for pool cleaning and some of the other outrageous claims we have heard about.
However, Andrew Mackay has served the residents of Bracknell and the surrounding areas for years. He has personally helped me with an issue in my area and I believe that he does genuinely care about the residents of the area.
I notice that the paper has highlighted the fact that Andrew Mackay does not have a home in Bracknell. Whilst it would be nice if he did, I can't see that it is of benefit to the tax payer for him to have a Bracknell home as well as the constituency in which his wife serves and in London. He can't really win can he - I'm sure he'd be slated for having three homes if he did live in Bracknell as well. I can understand the need for them as a couple to have a home in London when they are both visiting the Commons and to have a family home in the constituency where his wife serves and they have family.
I certainly do believe that British politics has been damaged by the recent expense revalations, but Mr Mackay is, I believe, a genuine MP who has been caught up in the foray. Outside of this, if we viewed his situation, I imagine most would support his two homes - one where the family is from and one in London near to the Commons. Outside of this, I imagine most people would say it would be right for some of the expenses of those homes to be met so he could fulfill his role as an MP. But given the current feeling about expense claims, Andrew Mackay is being picked on alongside those who really have been abusing the system.
As I understand it, Andrew Mackay asked the MP fees office what he should claim and they told him - he was then open about what he was claiming in the years since. In hindsight and with current public feeling, I imagine he realised that whilst it was acceptable to the expenses system, it wasn't the right thing to do so he resigned as aide to David Cameron. He showed integrity in doing so - he could have easily not done that, but I imagine he wanted to show that he realised the signifigance of the situation. Whilst some might call for him to show integrity even further and resign as an MP, I don't see that it would ultimately be of benefit to us for him to do so - he has served us better than most MPs.
I do not think the anger towards Andrew Mackay is justified - sure, he perhaps could have done better (he is human after all) but he asked the MP fees office what he should do and they told him. It would be no different to me asking my employer what business expenses I can claim and then doing so. Ultimately I believe the MP expenses system is flawed and anger should be directed at that, not Andrew Mackay who has worked hard for residents in Bracknell - I hope he continues to do so.

I have asked Both the Metropolitan Police and West Mercia Police to investigate them both with a view to bringing charges if appropriate. Their chief constables will receive identical letters on Saturday morning.
To the ordinary citizen this passes the "Duck test" that is, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck. The law may take a different view.
But this MP, this pair of MPs, are morally bankrupt. Neither is fit to serve. No amount of apologising will do the job. An apology is no use in the case of murder, after all.
It doesn't take much of a brain to see that each claiming for one residence is very likely to be fraudulent, whatever the fees office might have said. These people are meant to be honourable. We elect them with our delegated authority to rule over us. And they have lost the plot.
The next question is "Will they be removed from any directorships they hold?"
And "He has served us well for over 25 years"? What of that? Baloney. And no excuse for ripping us all off.
Roll on the "meet the public" meeting! Perhaps he will tell us why he ought not to be prosecuted.

Any employee would be fired for this, and papers would be lodged with the police with a view to determining whether a crime has taken place.
Paying the money back? yes, do all of that, but, Mr MacKay is no longer worthy of being our MP. His nose is firmly in the trough.
yes, he was a good MP, but he has already said that he made a very basic error of judgment. That error shows he is unfit to serve. I will not be voting for him shoudl he be foolish enough to stand for re-election. The Chiltern Hundreds is the next place he shoudl be heading.
