MP backs expenses reform after couple’s £266k claim

April 03, 2009

Bracknell MP Andrew MacKay and his wife claimed more than £260,000 in expenses last year.

But the Tory parliamentarian still supports a move to clamp down on MPs' expenses.

Mr MacKayand his wife Julie Kirkbride, who is MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, claimed  £266,495 between them last year including £45,658 in travel expenses.

He told The Standard he would welcome changes in the way MPs receive their expenses.

He said: “I support the Standard Commissioner’s inquiry into expenses and, together with David Cameron, I have urged him and the Prime Minister to bring this forward as quickly as possible and not leave the report until after the election.”

The pressure on Parliament to curb MPs’ expenses claims has increased since it was revealed that they claimed a total of £92.9million in 2007/08.

Mr MacKay added: “It is deeply regrettable that certain aspects of some MPs’ expenses have caused a loss of public confidence in Parliament, which has to be the cornerstone of our democracy.”

Utter greed, Mackay and his wife have been around long enough to know how to milk the system. I guess that's why they rebelled against their own party and Voted against a transparent Parliament, and disagreed with external audits of MPs expenses. Its time for bracknell Conservatives to choose in a new representative, otherwise I believe the Conservatives will lose the Bracknell seat.

I wish I could claim travelling and housing expenses from the people I worked for. Over £260,000? I'm in the wrong job! MacKay, along with many other MP's, are coining it in on our tax money. MP's seem to forget who they work for and represent. MP's are harping on about the expense claims being within the rules; if this is the case, the rules need to be changed. Not by the MP's, but by an indepndent body.
