Bunny warning as rescue centre reduces service

March 31, 2009

A rabbit rescue centre is urging people not to make Easter a flop for bunnies this year.

Green Fields Rescue, in Beedon Drive, Great Hollands, is scaling down its operation because of the credit crunch and time constraints.

Bbut people have ignored their notice and in the last few weeks 12 bunnies have been dumped on the centre’s doorstep.

Rescue manager Lorna Fields said the situation meant they had to install CCTV cameras to deter people from dumping the unwanted pets.

And, according to the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund, the situation will only be made worse by people buying real rabbits at Easter – rather than plumping for the  chocolate variety.

Green Fields Rescue will still be open most Sundays between midday and 2pm for advice and collection, but will not be taking in any more unwanted bunnies in 2009.

Lorna, who started the rescue centre eight years ago, said: “We think it is better to help a smaller number of rabbits and do it well than take in more bunnies and spend almost every waking hour trying to find ways to fund their care and rehabilitation.”

Green Fields Rescue was founded after Lorna and her husband Jamie adopted a rabbit, Bailey, who inspired them to help other rabbits in need.
