Kezia Obama's Washington diaryBy Kezia Obama
January 28, 2009
Kezia Obama has just returned from Washington DC where she saw her step-son Barack Obama sworn in as the President of the USA.
In between chatting to Barack and enjoying her visit the 67-year-old from Bullbrook kept a diary of her American adventure.
My day began as usual, it was the 15th of January 2009, the previous night I hadn’t slept properly I didn’t know why. All I have been thinking of was the unknown journey I was to embark on. A journey that was full of hope and joy.
In the morning when the day of travel arrived, I couldn’t believe what I was going through, everything was surreal to me, it was like I was on another planet.
Anyway, I left my house at around 06h00 and I was really excited. When I came out of my house and saw the Gala Bingo taxi my heart was pounding so fast, I didn’t know if it was out of excitement or fear. I had waited for this moment for a long time in my life it was like anticipating to meet my step-son Barack Obama for the first time.
The Gala Bingo taxi came to my house to collect me for my trip to Heathrow en route to D.C. Just before I left for the airport we took a lot of pictures. When the time to board the Gala Bingo taxi came I had butterflies in my stomach.
As I stepped into the Gala Bingo Taxi wow I thought, here I am just a simple woman from Kenya embarking on a journey to see the most powerful man of Earth – and who happened to be my step-son.
The Gala Bingo taxi was so comfortable, I felt like a queen from heaven. We arrived at Heathrow airport around 07h00, I took more pictures with the Gala Bingo crew.
The reception I received at the airport was first class, it was out of my imagination, it was like nothing I ever, never seen in my life.
I was received by the Virgin Atlantic crew in a high standard style as I was checking in. The police were waiting for me and it made me a little bit wary and nervous, but my son Sadik who was accompanying me on the trip assured me that everything was calm and they were only there to look after us, in fact they were very friendly and professional. That made me feel very relaxed and easy.
After Checking in we made our way to the Virgin Club Lounge and everyone we met were so nice and lovely to me. Am, sure by then they must have realised who I was, this being with the hospitality I was receiving, because it was high class by any standard imaginable.
I spent about two hours at the club lounge and it was so overwhelming when my time for my flight to Washington D.C was announced on the public address system. It really hit me for the first time that I was really going for my step-sons Barack Obama inauguration ceremony. Am saying this because I was escorted by six policemen as I was being driven in buggy car.
It was very special moment for me. These are things that I only see on TV and this time it was for real happening to me. I felt like a million dollar woman or rather a very famous celebrity. I was escorted all the way on the plane.
The Virgin Atlantic crew were very nice to me and I was well looked after all the way to Washington D.C.
I arrived late in the afternoon to a very warm reception as I stepped out of the aircraft I was whisked away very quickly to my hotel, Mayflower in D.C 17th Street by some mean looking people, I am not sure if they were secret agents or not but my guess was right they were secret agents.
I have heard a lot of stories about the guys on TV and in the newspapers, but they were doing their job, protecting the president’s mother. These guys were really cool and friendly, I never imagined.
As I arrived to check in my hotel it was unbelievable, all the big shots including Vice President Elect Joe Biden and his family were staying there. I was booked one floor above them, this was like a dream.
The following day my children joined me at the hotel and we took a lot of pictures. I really felt at home this time. I told my children this is all your late dad have been dreaming for someone to follow his path to set high standards to the family – YES WE CAN! I said.
I was filled with tears of joy and I wish their Dad was around to witness the big occasion.
When, the big day came of the inauguration of my step-son we got picked up by secret agents again, they drove us all the way to the Capitol Hill and I had the chance to meet my son – the new president of the most powerful nation on Earth.
As I got to the ceremony, I was ushered in to sit by the dignitaries at the front these were the Clintons, the George Bushes, Joe Biden and all the powerful people in the world.
Before that on 19th January 2009 I had gone to celebrate Martin Luther King Day at the Lincoln Memorial centre, it was freezing on this day but it was worth it.
Back to the inauguration day on the 20th January 2009, I met my son - MR PRESIDENT he came and shook my hands and gave me a big hug, I was so filled with joy and excitement – I couldn’t believe what was happening to me as you guys could see on TV this was real as the drama was unfolding I broke into a dance, traditional dance.
And to sum the whole story up was I got official invitation to the White House on the 23rd January 2009 to meet him. It so hard to describe these moments – Now I am on way back to London – England flying Virgin Atlantic with my children back to my roots and I can’t wait to step into a bingo hall and meet my Gala bingo friends.
Many thanks to Gala Bingo and friends who made it possible for my trip to see my step son MR PRESIDENT – LONG LIVE GALA BINGO, LONG LIVE MR PRESIDENT.
