100% proof needed to get served

Every pub and bar in the borough has been issued with new training cards in the battle against underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.

The cards carry a list of five things for staff to look for on a genuine proof-of-age card such as the photograph, date of birth, whether the card has been tampered with and that they are satisfied the person standing in front of them is the cardholder.

It also reminds staff to check the hologram on the cards issued by PASS, the UK’s national scheme for proof-of-age cards.

Insp Mark Harling, deputy commander of Bracknell Forest, said: “Reducing underage drinking improves the health and safety of our young people and means our neighbourhoods are less likely to suffer from alcohol-related anti-social behaviour.

“Anything which can help prevent those who are not entitled to buy alcohol from doing so is to be welcomed.”

Thames Valley Police was given 200,000 of the cards by PASS to improve retailer confidence and stop under-18s buying alcohol with forged cards.

Steve Baker, chairman of the National Pubwatch Scheme, said: “There is a lot of pressure on those working within licensed premises to be sure they don’t serve someone who is not old enough to buy alcohol.

“People can receive hefty fines for doing so and licensees risk losing their licence.

“This scheme will encourage more checks on the age of any customers and help those in the trade to protect their livelihood.”
