Shed blaze destroys mobility aids

April 11, 2008

Two electric scooters belonging to disabled people have been destroyed in a bin store fire.

People living in Templars Lodge in Crown Wood were woken at 3am on Wednesday by flames coming from the external storage cupboard.

No-one living in the block's 10 flats, which are occupied by disabled people, were hurt, but two electric scotters were damaged beyond repair and several other mobility aids damaged.

A spokesperson for Ability, the housing association which runs the flats, said: “We are relieved that the fire did not spread to the main building and that nobody was hurt.

"Our staff are assessing the damage and have prepared an inventory of items that have been lost.

"We need now to investigate alternative secure storage arrangements for our tenants.”

The block's tenants use the bin store, which is outside the block, to store personal belongings including mobility aids and electric scooters.
