Hunt for junk

April 04, 2008

Children in Bracknell Forest looking for a junk food fix at break time will have to search harder than others in Berkshire, a report has revealed.

There are only 14.5 junk outlets per secondary school in Bracknell Forest, making it one of the healthiest places in the country, says the School Food Trust.

The worst place, Brighton and Hove, had 46.11 per secondary school and the best, Bedfordshire, had 7.66.

Judy Hargadon, chief executive of the trust, said: “We all know that some children will go for chips five times a week if they are allowed to. The problem is that this is damaging their long-term health and is also threatening the viability of school lunch services.”

Neighbouring Wokingham faired well with 12 outlets per secondary school, Slough has 13.82 and Windsor and Maidenhead has 10.62. Reading did worse – it came fourth with 39.17 outlets per school, the second highest in the South East.
