Big Top collapses
By Franck MarceteauMarch 25, 2008
The collapse of a circus big top which caused chaotic scenes was due to freak weather conditions, according to health and safety bosses.
Seven people were taken to hospital after Billy Smart's Circus tent partially collapsed shortly before 5pm on Good Friday at Windsor racecourse.
Yesterday a spokeswoman at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead told Getbracknell the council's health and safety department would not be investigating the incident.
She said the collapse happened as a result of freak weather conditions and was not due to structural problems with the big top.
Chaotic scenes followed the collapse, which happened shortky after the begining of the show, as up to 500 people including families and childrens had packed into the giant tent.
South Central Ambulance NHS Trust, which rushed to the scene alongside fire crews from Windsor and Slough, reported seven people needing treatment at Wexham Park Hospital.
The circus has now moved on from the site, the council spokeswoman said.
