Chaos as man housebound after tree falls

By Mike Pyle

The storms were not  as bad as predicted but high winds caused severe damage this week in Bracknell.

The borough’s distinctive tall trees took a battering in the gale force winds with at least two uprooted and falling on to houses.

Jim and Denise Brice were woken on Monday at 5.30am by the sound of a falling tree.

Jim, who has multiple sclerosis and uses a mobility scooter to get around, said: “I normally sleep through anything but this woke me up.

“The tree fell down and hit the bungalow roof, bounced off making holes and taking off tiles, on to the car, damaging that badly and then it landed on the pavement next to the car.”

The damage to the Brices’ car was so bad it is a borderline write-off.

As a result, Jim is effectively housebound, because he cannot use taxis because of the size of the scooter.

He said: “The stress and aggro of all this is driving us mad.”

Jim, 58, said he had warned the housing association Ability, owned by London and Quadrant, about the dead trees but nothing was done.

On the same night a tree was toppled by wind in World’s End Hill, Forest Park.

Miguel Duraes and Lana Pellom woke on Monday to find one of the three tall trees in their back garden leaning precariously against the house.

Miguel said: “The roof’s not damaged, it must have just slowly fallen because it didn’t wake any of us up, even my five-month-old daughter.”

Miguel had the tree removed yesterday (Wednesday) but he is worried the other two trees in his garden could fall and damage his house or worse.

He said: “I’m worried about the other trees now. They could fall on any of us out in the garden.”
