ACTION GROUP FORCES RETHINK ON BEAUTY SPOT FENCE PLAN

AN action group formed to fight plans to fence off a beauty spot in Winkfield were celebrating last week after its 16,000 name petition forced a hasty rethink by the park’s owners.
The Crown Estate, owners of Windsor Great Park, had been planning to fence off the Valley Gardens area of the park, which borders on the parish.
However, residents were furious at the proposals, which included charging an entrance fee to the park and the closure of a car park, and they formed an action group last month to fight the plans.
The Valley Gardens Action Group plans to send the petition to the Queen, but it has already proved effective in changing Crown Estates plans.
A statement from the Crown Estate said: “Proposals to fence the Valley Gardens and introduce an element of entry charging, about which local concern has been raised, have been deferred.
“We will now be looking again at these proposals following extended monitoring of horticultural and landscape management issues over the next few years.”
Group member Paul Burns said: “The Easter weekend showed how popular the park is. If they made 200 acres of it virtually out of bounds, the crowds would have been herded around the lake.
“Everyone was been hugely saddened by the plans and as I spend my time helping in the park, I was thanked by several people for bringing this to their attention.”
