Traffic fears over new primary plans

By Jon Nurse
February 14, 2013

Traffic concerns have been raised about plans for three new primary schools – but parents and neighbours have been given an extra week to comment.

More than 50 comments have been sent to Wokingham Borough Council on planning applications for new schools in Smith’s Walk in Woosehill, Woodward Close in Winnersh and East Park Farm in Charvil.

Dozens of people are objecting over road safety issues across the sites, which must open in time for classes in September.

The Woosehill school is planned near the existing Acorn Centre off Fernlea Drive.

One objector said: “The Drive is already very hard to cross, especially for the elderly. The extra cars are going to mean extra danger to them getting to the doctors and supermarkets.”

More than 20 people have commented on a proposed school in Winnersh Farm and dozens made their feelings known at meeting with the project team on Monday.

One resident commented on the plans: “I understand the need for additional school places in the area.

“My main concern is the additional traffic that will be generated and how this will impact on residents.”

Charvil Community Tennis Club has joined objectors to the application for the school in East Park Farm.

In a letter to the council, club members state the relocating of two existing tennis courts is unacceptable and explains there was planning permission and sufficient demand for a third court to be built.

Neighbours raise concern over Winnersh school site

Of 31 comments, many underline the need for extra provision and question the fate of the Multi Use Games Area and tennis courts.

One comment says: “I object because of the highway safety as Park Lane is extremely busy at peak times and this will only make the traffic more congested and residents will suffer.”

Residents have until next Wednesday to comment on plans for the school.

One comment says "......residents will suffer". There also residents who are parents with children who are at real risk of not having a local school place this coming September. They will surely suffer if the school does not go ahead? School run traffic is by its very nature only an issue at certain times of the day and for certain weeks of the year. Hardly the same traffic that would result from 24 hour tesco superstore opening on the site which is what I have heard one vocal local compare the proposed school too!

At the Southern SDL meeting we were told clearly when complaining about the congestion that will be caused with the relief road exiting at the Tesco roundabout.

"This road is to facilitate this development. Not to solve congestion issues"

But if you will vote Tory.

Traffic is always seen as an excuse for everything! It is usually fairly obvious that something new will generate more traffic, it is how it is handled that matters and shouldn't be the default argument to try and get schemes thrown out.

So there won't be any increased traffic in Charvil when the 30 children who need school places this coming September have to get into cars to be driven to other schools in the area??? Surely better to have a local school and give parents the opportunity to walk their children to school?
