Children show their CAN-do spirit

A determined youngster found her wheelchair didn’t prevent her from enjoying the climbing wall at a Children with Additional Needs (CAN) fun day.
The event, organised by Wokingham’s CAN Network, was an opportunity for families to learn what help is available while trying their hand at crafts, circus skills and karaoke.
Abigail Wong, 13, conquered the climbing wall in her wheelchair at the event in Woodley on Saturday, July 7.
CAN co-ordinator Susie Rees said: “There were lots of families coming through the doors, some of who were new to the area.
“We’ve been running the family fun day for a few years. It enables people to find out what’s out there for them in terms of services while providing a free day of entertainment and fun for the children.
“It was really helpful for us too – we’ve gathered from a lot of feedback that something could be done as a bridge between children’s and adult services.”
The CAN Network is for families with children aged up to 19, helping plan services to ensure families receive relevant support.
A wide range of organisations including Thrive, Mencap and Dingley Family & Specialist Early Years Centres had stalls.
Children explored a mobile farm from Miller’s Ark Animals, while wannabe pop stars graced a karaoke and disco room and Camp Mohawk taught circus skills.
Susie added: “The weather was a bit hit and miss but the outdoor entertainment carried on and everyone had fun.”
