Light switch on is as pretty as a picture
December 31, 2010
Mulled wine and mince pies helped families get in the festive spirit at the annual St Nicholas Christmas night celebrations.
People from in and around Hurst gathered in the village on Sunday, December 5, to sing carols and watch the Christmas Lights being switched on by young competition winner Olivia Roberts.
Olivia won the honour of switching on the lights after coming first in a colouring competition run between St Nicholas Primary School and the Dolphin School in Hurst.
The youngster’s colourful creation featuring Santa Claus and the Village Church proved a hit among the judges and was selected as the winning entry.
The switch-on event drew the crowds with music from the Waltham St Lawrence band, while Twyford-based Chocoholics donated goodie bags for children.
Guests were also able to tuck into mince pies donated by Waitrose in Twyford, mulled wine from The Green Man pub and homemade sausage rolls from Councillor Penny Curry.
