Mum fined for son's truancy

March 02, 2010

A mum has been fined more than £900 for failing to make her 15-year-son go to school.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was fined £965 at East Berkshire Magistrates' Court after the Year 11 pupil missed 50 days of school between May and October 2009, a 66 per cent attendence rate.

She was prosecuted by Bracknell Forest Council.

Martin Gocke, acting director for young people and learning said parents had a responsibility to ensure children were educated but prosecution was not the first option.
