Jack Shilley’s potato tips for the Queen

June 29, 2009

A yound Bracknell schoolboy planted the seeds of an idea in the Queen’s head when he met her at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Ranelagh pupil Jack Shilley, 13, met the Queen at the famous flower show last month and explained to her how to grow potatoes in polythene bags.

Just one month later, the Queen has turned part of her gardens at Buckingham Palace into an organic allotment.

Jack and his classmates have been taking part in The Sun’s Potatoes for Schools campaign this year.

Sally Ballard, who co-runs the gardening club at Ranelagh, said: “Jack was just so excited to meet the Queen and he coped with it all tremendously well.

“I was very proud of him.”
