Parents' shock at school bus charge
By Alice MurphyMay 27, 2009
Parents in Finchampstead could have to fork out more than £750 a year for their children's school bus.
Families in the village say they have received a letter from Wokingham Borough Council bosses telling them they would no longer fund children's transport to Yateley Secondary School.
Although the Emmbrook School is closer to Finchampstead, many parents chose to send their offspring to Yateley School because it is quicker to get there.
Are you one of the parents affected by this? Have a say here.
Parents in the area have now laucnhed a campaign to provide a bus service to the school.
They say they are fuming at the council's decision, which denies parents a real choice for their children's secondary school.
The council says the decision follows new guidelines, which state that local authorities should only pay for transport to the designated school or a school nearer as measure by radial distance.
But parents hit out at the council saying it was the only one in the area to adopt such an "arbitrary" policy - neighbouring Reading, Bracknell Forest and Hampshire don't do that.
