School admissions under the spotlight

Changes to school admissions in Wokingham will be discussed at a meeting this evening.
More places at a Woodley school and fewer entry points for children starting school are among the changes under proposals.
Wokingham Borough Council bosses will debate and vote on the admission arrangements community and voluntary controlled schools for 2010/11 at the executive committee meeting at Shute End.

Among the changes are making two points of entry for school starters in September and January, instead of three.
Councillors will be asked to increase the pupil numbers for admissions at Waingels College from 220 to 240.
Councillor Rob Stanton, executive member for children’s services, said: “If these proposals are agreed it will ensure the admission criteria is clear, fair and objective.”
