Lorry overturns on A33 relief road

March 19, 2012

Traffic is currently severely disrupted on the A33 relief road where a 38-ton lorry has overturned on the northbound carriageway.

Police are keeping one lane open to allow traffic through but the crash is causing delays in both directions.

The lorry was carrying bulky household waste and the driver, who has a head injury, has been taken to hospital.

The accident is at the junction with Rose Kiln Lane and police say it is expected to cause problems for motorist in South Reading for "several hours",

   @A Concerned Local

Yip, that was ex Transport Tsar John Howarth.

He installed the lights citing them as a way to "reduce accidents" at that junction.

(now just when was the last time that was typed?????)

In defence of that junction...those Fred Sherwood lorry drivers don't hang around...and sometimes are a bit blase' about the lights at Island Road 5.30 in the morning

Have heard that the driver was turning right out of rose kiln lane onto A33. Perhaps he took the corner a little too fast/sharp and if lorry wasn't loaded properly, it could quite easily have shifted causing lorry to overturn.

If (and I stress if) this was the case, then surely it is down to the driver as it would be his responsibility to ensure the load he was carrying was safe, both for him and potentially other road users!

@ A concerned local : Your emphasis on Coffee suggests we kinda know each other via another resource?...PM me on that, with the non-Page guilty party for my elucidation? :) Meanwhile, I would argue Page is/was the under-writer.

Agree with you otherwise ... indeed, cams should be fitted and properly utilised for enforcement on every set of fairy-lights as a matter of rote.

Oh sorry COFFEE – Page never put these lights in – another RBC numpty did that many years ago

Which also shows that RBC can only employ ********s to ruin, sorry run the roads around Reading!

As he was carrying bulky household waste what’s the chance he had just come from the Smallmead RE3 Centre

If so he was on a straight road but at a junction where many morons think its okay to ignore the lane markings and travel straight on from lane 2, thus breaking the law by driving OVER the crosshatching / SOLID white line

It needs a camera or better still an island there to stop it (they won’t drive over that) – or put the roundabout back!!

The poor lorry is clearly tired and shagged out after a long squawk, Bless.

On a more serious note, and notwithstanding whether Dangermouse's suggested improper load balance is accurate or not, the utterly stupid cross-hatching consistently taken advantage of lies testament to the unwarranted and ignorant "My Way" change to the previously effective roundabout layout...anyone with half a brain recognised the cross-hatching would be ineffective from the get-go...as abundant half-brained drivers demonstrate at every cycle of those Page-imposed fairy lights.

That equally mindless fools in speeding vehicles then cut-up lorries and other vehicles forcing panic-stricken reactions (where often micro-second opportunity is afforded) lies testament to the appallingly selfish and irresponsible mentalities of those behind a wheel, and the complete failure to effectively manage that simple stretch of dual carriagway by the previously-mentioned, amply-demonstrated as half-brained, "wannabee" and his "team".

Yes a common occurance with fully-Laden 38-tonne vehicles driven at moderate speeds Smiffy? Perhaps he was distracted also by Dorothy's farm house flying past?

Do you think that the driver ISN'T responsible for the eveness of his load?

Because I can assure you, he is.

Could have been the trailer badly loaded, all the heavy stuff one side.Maybe not the driver's fault.

This is the second time in a week that the A33 has been closed due to accidents! Maybe something should be done about the speed people drive along it - see many people driving far too fast along here!

It takes some doing - Beaching a 38-tonne lorry, if you are driving a the designated speed for that road.

Reports have confirmed that an outrage Tony Page was at the scene trying to ascertain whether the driver of the lorry was just passing through or was planning to stop to buy a cup of tea.

   Hope the drivers oaky

A mate saw this and wondered what happened – I’ve always thought the junction was dangerous ever since they took out the perfectly good roundabout and put in lights with stupid lanes / cross hatching that no-one takes any notice of

Had many near misses there!
