Prize specimens on show at Bracknell Horticultural Association's Marrowthon
By Julie SpencerNovember 05, 2012
It was a squash at the Bandstand when dozens of gardeners showed off their prize specimens in Bracknell Horticultural Association’s Marrowthon.
Pumpkins, squash and gourds of all shapes, sizes and colours competed in three classes – the heaviest, the best looking and the most unusual.
Roy Adkins’ 44lb pumpkin was judged the heaviest and another of his crop was voted the best looking.
Andy Maxwell’s unusual blue-green winter Marina Di Chioggia squash was voted the most unusual at the Marrowthon on Sunday.
Andy, who is a spokesman for the club which meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Coopers Hill Community Centre, said: “We had double the amount of entries that we had last year.”
Monthly meetings at the club include a guest speaker and are open to all gardeners.
Andy said: “There are committed allotment holders like me, serious gardeners and those who are just getting into it.”
