Tour to celebrate Caversham Court Gardens' restoration

July 27, 2010

Guided tours and fun and games will be on offer on Friday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the restoration of Caversham Court Gardens.

The historic Thamesside garden received a revamp thanks to a £1.6 million lottery grant which paid for repairs to the 19th century gazebo and the serpentine crinkle-crankle retaining  wall.

Medieval cellars were unearthed, the structure of a Victorian hothouse rein-stated and a new terrace created from the footings of all the houses which have been on the site to reveal their history.

The open day runs from 1pm to 6pm with face-painting, storytelling, information stalls, Play Ranger games and guided tours run by the Friends of Caversham Court Gardens.

Cream teas and refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon from the kiosk operated by local charities.

Tom Stanway, lead councillor for culture and sport, said: “Caversham Court is one of the hidden gems of Reading, one of the most historic sites, set on the Thames and a fantastic spot to stop and unwind.”

The event is also part of national Love Parks Week.

it's amazing, no other known organisation on earth could justify the spending on so little, other than the council.

1.6 million gets you a wall, a hedge and a gazebo, what a bargain.
