Royal Berks hearing campaign goes mountain-ear-ing
June 26, 2012
Hearing experts at Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) have launched a campaign to raise £60,000 for a mobile testing unit.
Their first challenge will be to take part in a spot of mountain-ear-ing and climb Mount Snowdon on Saturday, June 30.
A team made up of around 30 members of staff, families and children will embark on the trek, along with a giant prosthetic ear, to support the Royal Berks Hearing and Balance Service’s new Hear We Go charity.
The unit will visit homes, schools, workplaces and more to test the hearing of people who find it more difficult or are unable to visit RBH.
Dr Rachel McCarthy, head of the audiology department, said: “The idea is that we have a fully functioning diagnostic environment so can do everything we do here.
“It will bring all the technology we have here but take that out into the community. One example is older patients may find it harder to get in due to mobility.
“We want to try to get something fully functioning by the autumn.”
