City Woman: Pants to Y-fronts

It was enough to make a footy widow buy a season ticket and rattle when Robbie Savage’s last professional game saw him strip off to his smalls and throw his kit into the crowd.

The 36-year-old officially retired when he played his last game for Derby, against Reading, on May 7, and this was probably the most interesting part for City Woman, who thinks this should be a footballing tradition if it isn’t already.

However, the City Woman jury is still out on this form of male undergarment and thinks boxers or lycra shorts are probably more popular with most men.

But Y-fronts, as sported by Le Sauvage, do have an air of 1970s raw maleness about them, worn by the kind of man who would spritz on Brut, Old Spice or Hai Karate before a night out in his VW Scirocco.

According to Vanessa Lynch, store manager at House of Fraser in The Oracle, men’s attention to their smalls is just as acute as the fashionable girl – and, dear Robbie, plain white is so last season.

“Men want to put the fun factor back into their pants. They are choosing snazzy colours, branded waistbands and body enhancing fits,” she said.

“Dull Y-fronts and boring boxers, that are so typically associated with men’s underwear drawers, are a thing of the past.”

Indeed, Y-fronts and traditional pants make up less than three per cent of the store’s men’s undie offering.

For those who need a bit of a lift, the Wonderjock Pro is sure to turn heads.

But as for Robbie, it looks like he can take care of himself.
