City Woman: Minerals are a bare necessityBy Leigh Mencarini

Sticky hot weather often means the last thing you want on your face is make up.
It’s usually about now I switch to a tinted moisturiser, but it rarely gives the even coverage of a liquid foundation – and still feels like it suffocates my skin.
So I was interested to learn about mineral make up. Its pure ingredients claim to actually benefit the skin.
I met SJ Froom at House of Fraser in Reading, the national make up artist for bareMinerals, created by Bare Escentuals.
She explained why mineral make up has been taking the beauty world by storm.
“It because it is completely natural,” she said.
“There are no fillers, binders, or chemicals – just pure, crushed rocks from the earth.”
SJ was in store to give advice and demonstrations – and by the looks of the concession stand, mineral make up needed explaining. It was covered with countless pots and brushes.
“Often when women have their make up done in store they don’t feel like themselves afterwards,” SJ said, “which is why we call what we do a ‘makeunder’, not a makeover. These products give you back the skin you were born with.”
First, SJ applied a primer, an essential base for a flawless finish which gave a lightweight but silky coverage.
Then she sprinkled a tiny about of mineral powder, an SPF 15 foundation, into the lid of one of the pots. Dabbing it with a brush and shaking off the excess, she applied it in circular motions.
It didn’t feel like anything was going on, but when she showed me the mirror, my complexion appeared flawless. In contrast to heavy liquid foundation, my skin felt as if it could breathe.
“It contains a lot of zinc, which is very healing,” SJ said.
“You can even wear it to bed because it’s better for your skin to use it than to not.
“This won’t flake off in the heat. It’s water resistant and non-transferable, which is great for this time of year.”
