Lib Dem Gareth Epps fighting for the rights of beer drinkers

March 08, 2010

Pub regulars and beer drinkers have a new champion in the General Election campaign.

Reading East Lib Dem candidate Gareth Epps is fighting for the rights of beer drinkers in the constituency.

Cllr Epps has made a series of commitments based on a Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) charter.

The CAMRA Beer Drinkers and Pub Goers Charter sets out a series of commitments and Cllr Epps has endorsed them.

He has committed to:

  • Promote the interests of Britain’s pubgoers
  • Champion well-run community pubs
  • Support the rebalancing alcohol taxation to support beer and pubs
  • Press for reform of beer tie – forcing licensees to use particular suppliers – to deliver a fair deal for consumers
  • Support the role of well-run pubs as solutions to alcohol misuse.

CAMRA has called on prospective Parliamentary candidates to back the campaign.

Cllr Epps last year released a survey of Reading East’s publicans which showed that most earned less than £15,000 a year and many feared they would not be in the trade in five years’ time.

He has campaigned to reopen Newtown’s Jolly Anglers pub and is working on a Liberal Democrat manifesto for pubs to be launched shortly.

He wrote the national Liberal Democrat policy which saw the party lead calls for Progressive Beer Duty – a reduction on beer duty for small craft brewers – to be introduced.

This change has led to the rapid growth of small craft breweries in this area such as Loddon Brewery in Dunsden.

Mike Benner, CAMRA’s chief executive, welcomed Cllr Epps’s support for the charter, saying:  “We are delighted that Gareth Epps has promised to work to promote the interests of beer drinkers and pubgoers.

“Well-run pubs make a huge contribution to community life, each of which injects £80,000 into their local economy every year.

“Amid growing concern over the loss of more than five pubs a day, it is now more important than ever to support well-run community pubs, to promote local brewers and to protect the interests of consumers.”

After signing up to the CAMRA charter, Cllr Epps said: “I am proud to be speaking up for community pubs, local brewers and consumers.

“Beer is part of Reading’s heritage, and it is great to once again see local small brewers thriving in and around our town.

“Well-run pubs are the bedrock of community life – they are part of the solution to the problem of alcohol misuse and not part of the problem.

“They deserve our support.”

There are several dubious claims from different political quarters on their websites and in leaflets about their active role in the campaign to reopen The Jolly Anglers, but despite being instrumental and providing invaluable day-to-day advise to campaigners Gareth has never to my knowledge made any such dubious claims. I take a non-political stance; so if Gareth milks publicity on other or similar causes he feels passionate about then I'd ask what's so shocking about that?

Reading East is not natural Labour territory so if the Lib Dems are ever to secure second place there it is likely to be at Labour's expense. Consequently, Mr Epps should be targetting Labour wards and voters. In Reading West the opposite is true so the Lib Dems should be aiming for the Tories there. As a by-product, these tactics will reduce the chances of either ‘big’ party gaining a Commons majority.

Poor old Gareth - Dont worry mate any positive story on this board brings out the moaners. Good on you, what you're doing is right, I dont like to see pubs closed and a positive story coming from community pubs can only be good. Plus it is a true liberal stance.

I would have thought Gareth would be interested in the more hard hitting issues in Reading, as he hopes to become the MP for Reading East? At the moment, he just comes across as only interested in campaigning for his own hobbies! Funny how every story in the Post, relating to a pub mentions Gareth…

   @Gareth

well don't stick it on your election leaflets then! As a claim it's up there with the Lib Dems being the only party to challenge the Tories in Reading East. That's bending the truth so far that you can see where you started from.

"After signing up to the CAMRA charter and sinking 8 pints of Ferryman's Gold, Cllr Epps said: “I love you, yoursh my besht mate...curry?"

Arthur - you're absolutely right to say I was one of many people involved in the campaign. On that basis, the words in the article are right.

Unlike certain others I could mention, I have always emphasised that Jollydarity was a non-political campaign with active members of at least two (to my knowledge) other parties involved.

Quite rightly, in all of the coverage of the reopening of the Jolly Anglers, the limelight has been on Cathy, Colm and other Newtown residents who have led the campaign.

So who will stand up for the rights of beer drinkers in Reading West? My vote is still available.

Let's be clear here: Epps was one a hundreds of people who joined a community campaign to reopen the Jolly Angers. He must not be allowed to take any glory from this. It was a team - and cross and non-party effort not a victory for him or the Lib Dems.
