2010 Reading Pubwatch Award winners

By Paul Robins
February 25, 2010

A popular Tilehurst pub made it four wins in a row at last night's prestigious Reading Pubwatch awards.

The Fox and Hounds in City Road was once again voted Best Traditional pub and Allied Arms barmaid Lois Aldred picked up the Bar Personality of the Year gong.

Plug n Play was named Best Live Music venue, while trendy town centre bar Sakura won Best Dance Venue, beating close competition from Mango and Face Bar.

Nearly 250 licensees, bar staff and door supervisors packed out Shehnai banqueting suite in London Street at the glitzy bash.

All had made charity donations for a place at the awards ceremony, which included a three-course dinner, and was hosted by Pubwatch supremo Bill Donne.

The awards judging panel sifted through hundreds of nominations for the coveted awards, which celebrate the hard work that has gone into raising standards in pubs, clubs and bars in the town.

Competition was fiercest in the Best Pub category, which saw five winners from different parts of the town.

The Griffin won best Caversham pub, The Nags Head was selected as best pub in West Reading, the Allied Arms took the honours for the town centre, and the Hopleaf was the best in the South and East. The Fox and Hounds took the Tilehurst title.

Mr Donne said: “It was a superb evening.

“These awards were all about recognising the hard work and dedication of the licensing trade."

I think you are all being rather hard on the poor old 'Hope Tap'. I've spent many an enjoyable evening down there waiting all night to get served.

The Hope Tap? Nothing BennyBoy! It’s a typical pseudo we believe our own hype, aren’t we just wonderful J D Wetherspoon pub. So for the nastiest bar smell, most urine saturated seating, slovenly staff and miserable management one must go no further than one of their nameless faceless establishments.

However let’s be positive. A great EP Award idea and I must say all the winners’ deserver their awards. . And what a glorious venue the Shehnai is. That should get an award too.

The Hope Tap won..........the hearts and minds of the residents of Reading.

In all seriousness it won the Smells Like An Open Sewer Award 2010.
