Free buses for jobseekers

January 04, 2013

Job hunters could benefit from free bus travel throughout January.

Sustainable travel campaign group Greener Journeys has joined forces with travel operators to run the Bus for Jobs scheme to help jobseekers find work.

Taking part in the Reading area are Thames Travel, which runs services between Reading and Oxford, Goring, Twyford and Wokingham, and Arriva, which runs a between Reading and High Wycombe.

Jobseekers who have been unemployed for between three months and one year are eligible.

The initiative will cover holders of a JobCentre Plus travel discount card, which is available through JobCentre Plus.

Right enough about those that want to work Hudson, but that minority, although a minority isn't as small as it might or should be. I know of plenty that could work but choose not to.......or possibly can't 'afford' to.................as you point out about with the remark about low wages.

It is easy folk: stop worrying about the minority who won't, can't and might be more trouble if they did work. They really are a minority - don't believe the onslaught of political playing over this.

Instead worry about those that want to work and can't get a job. Those that are woefully under-paid and have little scope for self-improvement...we can't all be super stars. Worry about the apalling earnings gap.

Then do something about it.

I was thinking of packing in my job on the strength of this headline. Just in time, I realised it wasn't a free bus after all.

Lucky really, I was about to tell the boss exactly what I thought of me.

Well said Crane God............those that I know that are unemployed long term have no intention of working and, if the truth were told, probably can't actually 'afford' to take a job on the wage that they might achieve. To others that that really want to work this might help a little, good luck to you.

What has the (left-wing get-out-of-jail, default answer) Daily Mail, got to do with broad-minded educated persons opinions moonbeam?

Low? relatively low? Have you taken a day off of work and walked through this lauded town of ours recently?

I have folk within my own "family network" that play the system and have no intention of going to work....now it seems, their grown up kids are doing the same.

You dont need to be a Daily Mail reader to walk around with your eyes occasionally open.

You all realise that unemployment in Reading is relativity low don't you? But obviously don't let the facts get in the way of the hate filled bile spouted out by the Daily Fail get in the way eh?

My memories of dealing with jobcentre staff have never been fond ones, but more ones of confusion as to which side of the desk are the clients and which are the confused dribbling idiots...

I don't think either side knew for definate but I'm guessing not much has changed except maybe replacing some of the staff with touch screen computers.

Should be giving this to the taxpayers instead of the the unemployed. The taxpayers would benefit from this a hell of a lot more than the unemployed would do. Then again, the bus companies probably aren't expecting many unemployed people to use the buses whereas they would lose a lot of income if they offered this to the employed.

@Readingbedding, definitely not, ever! Went to the Wokingham one when I was a teenager, and that's been shut for years which shows how long it's been! I have seen the workers of the Reading one though, heading in for their shift... woah

@Hugh, yeah they did that when I went as well, guess it didn't last long due to their "in and out, quick as you can" mentality for getting through the queues

Bruce, I'm sure you are right but I remember the Jobcentre introducing something similar back when I was looking for work. I remembered thinking if I get an interview and I can't afford the bus fayre (despite getting JS allowance for such things) then I'll walk there myself...
