Boost for youth employment skills

February 17, 2012

Young people should act now to take advantage of free courses and boost their skills and CVs.

Reading Borough Council’s Positive Futures project and the MAPIS Academy and Modelling Agency have worked together on a sport and culture programme for 10- to 19-year-olds.

The three-week courses starting on Monday are in photography and media, health and fitness, and fashion and beauty.

There is also a chance to work with experts on CV, interview and presentation skills and at the end of the course the young people will plan their own event to showcase their work to friends, family and other professionals.

Tutors will then help them find further training, or a job or apprenticeship.

Marian Livingston, Reading’s lead councillor for culture and sport, said: “Not only will the courses give youngsters more of an idea about the professions they are interested in, they will also provide them with the key skills they are going to need to gain employment further along the line.”

Agree with you (for once) deinh.

It also serves to demonstrate how we are increasingly becoming a service-oriented nation, pandering to personal aesthetics and call-centre mentalities, rather than being a manufacturing-oriented nation, striving to lead, and being justifiably proud of it.

The old joke still holds true : "You can tell a British worker by his hands....they are always in his pockets".

Sadly, these days, they seem to be seeking new ways into other people's pockets for the minimum of effort.

These coarses are great for the young school leaver. But and here is the crux of the matter the hard core of younge unemployed do not come into this age group. There is a large percentage of young unemplyed who are between the ages of 20 to 25 who have no work experiance. They don't get a foot in the door by employers who are only interested in E.U and outside workers. They are not help by the job centres into work despite puppy dog schemes which are not enacted by the staff. They just go and sign on for their benefit and thats it no help or advice on getting training for a job or getting an actual job is given. So how the hell are these growing hard core of unemployed supposed to get a job.Yes the've got educational qualifications but no practical so an employer don't want to know.Apart from some volunteer groups willing to take on the young mostly helping youth clubs or working in charity shops there is nothing, even the voluntry work is based on who you know strangers not wellcome.Much is said about the young being lazy benefit scroungers. But if they are being turned away or not helped and guided into work because the've no expereance what hope have they. This is without those who had a brush with the law when very young and got a record but are now grown up enough to be good citizens they are marked for life. Forget about the slate being wiped clean at 18/21 it's not ,police checks reveal them on records. Most of these records are doing something while drunk with school mates. Most are not major crimes but ones which us older generation would class as high spirits no puns meant. A couple of weeks ago there was a major store saying how they have helped and are helping the young unemployed into work by giving training in there stores leading to jobs.It stated they helped NEETS up to the age of 25.But it turned out on investigation they where just doing a work expereance scheme for these same 16/18 year olds over that age your not wanted. What kind of message is that sending out to the young.

My thoughts exactly deinh. The paragraph after that though is the one that is of use to them and employers.

Photography and media, health and fitness, and fashion and beauty. That's just what the kids are missing today it seems, and preventing them getting on in life.
